Searchlight, NV (December 15, 2020) – On Thursday, five people were killed in a Searchlight bicycle crash. The victims have since been identified.
According to police, the accident took place when handfuls of bicyclists set out for a 130-mile race. As the bicyclists were approaching the Searchlight area on I-95, the wind started to pick up in the area. Seven riders decided to break off from their group and went behind a Subaru that was carrying food, water, and spare tires for them.
A white unmarked box truck came up behind the seven bicyclists and struck them, pinning all of them against the back of the Subaru. The bicyclists were all ejected from their bikes.
Five of the bicyclists died at the scene of the accident. The parties who lost their lives have since been identified as 39-year-old Erin Ray, 57-year-old Michael Murray, 48-year-old Aksoy Ahmet, 57-year-old Thomas Trauger, and 41-year-old Gerrard Nieva.
One of the victims was badly injured and was taken to a local hospital by medical helicopter in critical condition. They are now expected to recover. The driver of the Subaru was also injured and hospitalized.
The driver of the box truck was not hurt and remained at the scene to cooperate with the police.
No further details have been released. The investigation is currently ongoing.
